Alderney Transport

Alderney

Alderney is the third largest of the Channel Islands and can be reached by either air or ferry.

By Air

The easiest and quickest way of reaching Alderney is by air with Aurigny Air Services. Aurigny run regular flights to Alderney from Guernsey which takes around 10-15 minutes. They also operate to Southampton on the main land generally at least 3 times a day. Due to the size of the airport in Alderney, small Trislander planes are used on this route, carrying up to 15 passengers.

By Ferry

There is no regular ferry service to or from Alderney. Vedettes du Cotentin run a ferry from Dielette near Cherbourg in France to Alderney. This typically runs a few times a month and the timetable can be viewed on their website. Manche Iles Express run a ferry service to Alderney from Dielette near Cherbourg but it is very infrequent (at present around once a month in the summer). Lastly, Bumblebee Boat Cruises operate a ferry service between Guernsey and Alderney. This generally runs on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday afternoons with one crossing each way except on Wednesday when there are two crossings.

Getting around the island

There is no regular public transport around the island. The island does have a railway service but it generally only runs on weekends during the summer with a couple of trains in the afternoon. The best option for getting around the island is either to walk or hire a bke. Cycle and Surf offer a bicycle hire service. As the island is only 3.5 miles by 1.5 miles you are never very far from anywhere and with St Anne, the capital near the centre of the island you can be there in around half an hour walk from most parts of the island. Braye Hire Cars provide hire cars if you prefer to drive.
